Spain have not conceded a goal in five consecutive World Cup matches, progressing from the group stage through a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria before edging rivals Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16. Belgium, meanwhile, arrive after dismantling co-hosts United States 4-2, with Charles De Ketelaere scoring twice inside the opening half hour before Romelu Lukaku sealed the victory from the bench.

One side has built the tournament's most resilient defensive structure. The other has consistently found ways to break open even well-organised opponents.

The quarter-final therefore becomes a fascinating tactical examination rather than a simple battle of styles. Can Spain's positional control continue to suffocate elite attacks, or will Belgium's vertical movement finally expose the first weakness in Luis de la Fuente's defensive machine?

Tactical Blueprint: De Ketelaere's Movement vs Spain's Defensive Structure

De Ketelaere's performance against the United States was built less on individual brilliance than intelligent movement. Rather than remaining alongside the centre-backs, he repeatedly drifted into the half-spaces between midfield and defence, forcing defenders into difficult positional decisions. Follow him, and gaps emerge behind. Hold position, and he receives freely between the lines.

That movement places particular responsibility on Pau Cubarsí.

The young Spanish defender has impressed throughout the tournament with his proactive style, stepping forward aggressively to intercept rather than retreating into a passive defensive block. Against De Ketelaere, however, every aggressive step carries additional risk. If Cubarsí follows him too far into midfield, Hans Vanaken and Belgium's supporting runners immediately gain access to the space behind.

Aymeric Laporte's role therefore becomes increasingly important. Rather than joining Cubarsí in pressing forward, he may be required to provide balance by protecting the defensive line and ensuring Spain always retain cover against Belgium's vertical attacks.

Spain's centre-back pairing have yet to concede together during this tournament. Belgium present their most sophisticated positional challenge so far.

Midfield Sovereignty: The Battle for Rodri

Trapping the Tournament's Deepest Playmaker

Spain's attacking rhythm begins with Rodri.

Every phase of possession flows through the Manchester City midfielder, whose passing dictates both tempo and field position while creating the spaces Pedri and Lamine Yamal exploit higher up the pitch.

Belgium's likely solution will be to compress the central corridor around him.

By crowding Rodri and restricting his forward passing lanes, Belgium can attempt to force Spain into slower, wider circulation rather than allowing direct progression through midfield.

The difficulty lies in maintaining defensive balance while committing additional players centrally.

Spain are exceptionally comfortable recycling possession. Drawing opponents toward one side before quickly switching play has become one of their defining attacking patterns. If Belgium overcommit to suffocating Rodri, the opposite flank becomes vulnerable, particularly with Pedro Porro's overlapping runs creating isolation opportunities for Yamal.

Neutralising Rodri is tactically logical.

Doing so without opening new problems elsewhere is considerably more difficult.

Creating Isolation for Lamine Yamal

Portugal attempted to limit Yamal by consistently doubling up whenever he received possession on the right touchline.

Belgium are likely to adopt a similar approach.

Spain's answer lies in Porro's overlapping movement.

As the full-back advances beyond Yamal, Belgium's second defender faces a decision: continue doubling Yamal and allow Porro space outside, or track the overlap and leave Yamal isolated one-on-one.

Either choice creates opportunities.

Spain's attacking structure is designed precisely to manufacture these small numerical advantages, and Belgium's defensive organisation will need exceptional coordination to prevent those overloads developing consistently.

Team News and Predicted Lineups

Neither side suffered fresh injuries or suspensions during the Round of 16, allowing both managers to select from virtually full-strength squads.

Spain are expected to retain the front three that defeated Portugal, with Dani Olmo operating between the lines behind Mikel Oyarzabal while Lamine Yamal provides width from the right.

One notable selection decision remains on the left flank. Nico Williams offers direct pace and penetration behind Belgium's defence, while Olmo's narrower positioning creates additional central combinations. De la Fuente's final choice will shape Spain's attacking balance.

Belgium's structure appears more settled.

Following his outstanding performance against the United States, De Ketelaere should again lead the attack, supported by runners capable of turning transitions into immediate scoring opportunities.

Predicted Lineups

Spain (4-3-3): Unai Simón; Pedro Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri, Baena; Lamine Yamal, Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo

Belgium (4-2-3-1): Casteels; Castagne, Mechele, Ngoy, De Cuyper; Lukebakio, Tielemans; Doku, Raskin, Trossard; De Ketelaere

Match Prediction and Betting Analysis

Editorial Verdict: Spain 1-0 Belgium

Please gamble responsibly. 18+ only. Odds subject to change.

Spain enter as narrow favourites, and the reasoning extends beyond five consecutive clean sheets.

Their ability to control possession reduces the number of transition opportunities Belgium rely upon, while Rodri's influence allows Spain to dictate the rhythm for extended periods. Belgium possess enough attacking quality to create chances regardless, particularly through De Ketelaere's movement and the pace of their wide players, but sustaining those attacks against Spain's compact defensive structure is a different challenge altogether.

Belgium should create Spain's sternest defensive examination of the tournament.

Their vertical transitions, intelligent movement between the lines and willingness to attack quickly after regaining possession are precisely the characteristics capable of unsettling Spain's positional control.

However, Spain possess the deeper tactical flexibility.

Should Belgium successfully restrict Rodri or double-mark Yamal, De la Fuente has already demonstrated his willingness to alter matches through substitutions, with Ferran Torres and Mikel Merino proving decisive against Portugal.

The margins are unlikely to be large.

Spain remain better equipped to control the decisive moments.
