In Doha four years ago, France ended Morocco's remarkable World Cup journey with a 2-0 semi-final victory. Theo Hernández struck inside five minutes before Randal Kolo Muani sealed the result late on. Morocco had become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, but Didier Deschamps' side demonstrated the ruthless efficiency that ultimately carried them to another final.

This reunion arrives under very different circumstances.

Morocco enter the quarter-finals unbeaten in 34 international matches under Mohamed Ouahbi after dismantling Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16 with a level of attacking fluency that was rarely seen during their historic 2022 campaign. France, meanwhile, remain unbeaten with fourteen goals scored and just two conceded, while Kylian Mbappé arrives tied with Lionel Messi on seven goals in the Golden Boot race.

The obvious storyline centres on Mbappé against Morocco's depleted midfield.

The tactical reality is considerably more balanced.

Tactical Breakdown: Containing the World's Most Dangerous Left Flank

The Hakimi Dilemma

Morocco's biggest tactical challenge extends beyond simply asking Achraf Hakimi to defend against Mbappé.

Hakimi's greatest strength has always been his attacking ambition. His willingness to surge forward, overlap into advanced positions and even drift inside gives Morocco another creative outlet in possession. Against France, however, every forward run carries significant risk.

Whenever Hakimi vacates the right flank, Mbappé immediately attacks the space left behind. France's transitions are designed to release their captain into those wide channels before opponents can recover their defensive shape, making Hakimi's positioning one of the defining strategic decisions of the match.

Ouahbi is therefore likely to ask his right-sided midfielder to provide consistent cover whenever Hakimi advances, allowing the Paris Saint-Germain full-back to contribute offensively without exposing Morocco to repeated transition attacks.

That balance will not be easy to maintain over ninety minutes.

Lucas Digne's overlapping runs add another layer of complexity. If Deschamps persists with Digne at left-back rather than restoring Theo Hernández, Morocco's right side must simultaneously track Mbappé's inward movement and Digne's overlaps — forcing constant communication between Hakimi, his nearest midfielder and the right-sided centre-back.

Team News: Morocco Reshuffle After Saibari Blow

Rebuilding the Midfield

Ismael Saibari's tournament-ending muscular injury against Canada removes one of Morocco's most influential players at the worst possible moment.

His value went beyond goals or assists. Saibari consistently progressed possession through central areas, carrying the ball beyond the first line of pressure before releasing runners between defensive lines. That ability connected Morocco's defensive organisation with their increasingly expansive attacking approach.

Replacing that profile is difficult.

Sofyan Amrabat offers greater defensive security and physicality but lacks Saibari's progressive ball carrying. Selecting Bouaddi and El Aynaoui would provide more technical progression through midfield, although both would shoulder enormous responsibility against one of the tournament favourites.

Morocco's defensive options have also been affected by injuries sustained throughout the competition. Issa Diop and Redouane Halhal are expected to continue in central defence, with both likely to face sustained pressure from France's varied attacking movement.

Predicted Lineups

France (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Koundé, Upamecano, Saliba, Digne; Koné, Rabiot; Dembélé, Olise, Barcola; Mbappé

Morocco (4-2-3-1): Bounou; Hakimi, Diop, Halhal, Mazraoui; El Aynaoui, Bouaddi; Ounahi, Diaz, Khannouss; Rahimi

Form Guide: The Ghost of 2022 Meets a 34-Match Unbeaten Run

Breaking Morocco's Aura

Morocco's unbeaten run is significant not because it guarantees future results, but because it has built extraordinary confidence within this squad.

Unlike the 2022 semi-final, they enter this meeting expecting to compete rather than merely survive.

The previous encounter was effectively shaped within five minutes when Theo Hernández's early strike forced Morocco away from their preferred defensive structure. Chasing the game against a side as disciplined as France proved an impossible task.

Deschamps will undoubtedly seek another fast start.

An aggressive opening spell designed to pin Morocco inside their own half and establish an early lead would recreate the conditions that worked so effectively four years ago.

Morocco's response could determine everything.

Their defensive organisation completely shut down Canada in the Round of 16, but they have yet to face an attacking unit with France's combination of pace, movement and finishing quality during this tournament.

France understandably begin as favourites.

Their combination of tournament form, defensive stability, squad depth and Mbappé's outstanding scoring form provides a compelling analytical case for progression.

Under 2.5 goals remains attractive given both managers' preference for controlled knockout football. France have managed games efficiently rather than chasing expansive scorelines, while Morocco's success continues to be built upon disciplined defensive organisation.

France to win in regulation is supported by Morocco's midfield disruption following Saibari's injury and France's superior attacking depth.

Morocco's clearest route to an upset lies in extending the contest deep into the second half. If Bounou can frustrate France long enough to introduce doubt into the favourites' approach, Morocco possess enough counter-attacking quality through Hakimi, Rahimi and Ounahi to create decisive moments.

The Tactical Question

France have occasionally been criticised for lacking attacking fluency despite their excellent results.

Deschamps would likely argue that tournament football rewards efficiency rather than entertainment.

Fourteen goals and only two conceded suggest his approach continues to work.

Morocco have evolved considerably since 2022, becoming a more adventurous attacking side under Ouahbi while maintaining much of the defensive discipline that defined their previous World Cup run.

The challenge is whether they can sustain that balance without Saibari.

His absence reduces Morocco's ability to progress quickly through midfield and places additional creative responsibility on Ounahi and Rahimi against one of the tournament's strongest defensive structures.

France are unlikely to dominate possession for long stretches.

They may not need to.

One moment from Mbappé, one transition through Dembélé, or one set-piece could prove sufficient in a contest expected to feature limited clear chances.

Prediction: France Edge Another Tight Encounter

Prediction: France 1-0 Morocco

Morocco are stronger than the side France eliminated in 2022.

Their unbeaten run reflects genuine tactical evolution, greater attacking confidence and a squad that believes it belongs among the world's elite.

Yet they also arrive weakened compared to the team that began this tournament.

Saibari's injury fundamentally alters Morocco's midfield balance, while France continue to look increasingly comfortable as the knockout rounds progress.

Mbappé's pursuit of the Golden Boot adds another dimension, but France's advantage ultimately lies in their collective efficiency rather than individual brilliance.

Morocco should make this another fiercely competitive contest.

France still possess the quality to find the decisive breakthrough.
